Portrait of the Trust Company

Trust is something that can’t be demanded. It can only be earned. It’s the consequence of several qualities of which honesty, integrity and diligence form the foundation of our business. For over 125 years, The Trust Company has endeavoured to ensure our professional service reflects these enduring qualities – the hallmark of ‘a fiduciary’ or a trusted advisor that acts in its clients best interests.

In our 126th Annual Report, we reflect on The Bigger Picture and take stock of the trends and market issues in the regional market and our five year Change Program to best position our business for the future. As global financial markets reset their bearings after the impact of the global financial crisis and the Asia-Pacific region grows ahead of the rest, the timing is ripe to welcome Guardian Trust, New Zealand’s pre-eminent professional trustee, to the Group. Guardian Trust has a complementary trustee business for Personal Clients and Corporate Clients, an aligned cultural DNA and a strategic intent to excel as an independent professional trustee. We also reflect on the new journey that started with the Brand Relaunch at the 125th Annual General Meeting, a journey that Guardian Trust has now joined.

Our Strategy – to be the region’s pre-eminent trustee – is timely and compelling. As part of our recent strategic review of the business, we reconfirmed those enduring qualities that underlie trustee operations with our staff in a more contemporary document. Our Ethical Framework – ‘On Which We Stand’ – captures the values and guiding principles of our business and represents the creed we adopt in our daily work. It guides how we conduct ourselves both internally and externally to the highest ethical standards. After all, this is what being a pre-eminent trustee is all about.

Our Purpose – to create value for our shareholders through caring for the wealth and wellbeing of our clients and our community – reminds us to attend to the interests of our many stakeholders to ensure that, in the end, they all benefit. In looking for a symbol for our purpose and identity, we reached into our rich heritage and customised the three turreted castle used by our antecedent, The Union-Fidelity Trustee Company of Australia Limited. Peeling back this symbol to the inner sanctum or safest part of the castle – The Keep – and stylising our image for a contemporary feel with the branded “T” to denote ‘The Trust Company’, we had our logo. The imperial colour purple was chosen for its pre-eminence and distinction.

As an organisation, we have endured many changes through which we strengthened our capabilities. Be the change political, social, economic or cultural, we engaged. The timeline presented over the next page describes how we have intersected with the more recent history of our communities in Australia, Singapore and New Zealand. It also illustrates how we view our role in the larger timeline of life to care for the wealth and wellbeing of our clients and our communities.
